Help Celebrate Life!
There are children around the world who cannot afford to eat three meals a day. Many are malnourished and starving. In celebration of your birthday or a special occasion, sponsor a project to help children in need of food. There are many different choices and even the smallest donation will make a big difference in these children’s lives.
KENYA
Kawangware Street Children and Youth Project (KSCYP)
Kwangware is one of the largest slums on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya with more than 400,000 people, most of them living on less than $1 a day; 65% are children and youth. KSCYP was founded in 2002 to create social and economic opportunities for vulnerable children, orphans, and at-risk youth in Kawangware. These children often live in shanties and come from broken families. Unfortunately, every day the number of orphans increases due to HIV/AIDS in the community. These children live in the streets, eating garbage, which results in malnutrition and sickness. Some die of a lack of food and water, others lose their desire to live. In order to generate funds for Kawangware, 70 of the oldest children of KSCYP make decorative paper bags to sell. Still, despite these efforts, food is very scarce and children continue to suffer in Kawangware.
KENYA
Samburu Handicap Education & Rehabilitation Programme (SHERP)
A journey to Samburu is about 180 miles along eight hours of rough road from Nairobi. When it rains, the trip can take up to 20 hours. The Samburu tribe of Northern Kenya is an isolated tribe presently suffering a devastating drought. Handicapped children in the Samburu region are often considered bad omens to their family and are sometimes left behind when families move on looking for food. Unfortunately, some are even buried alive, poisoned with tobacco, or tied up and thrown in the wilderness to be eaten by wild animals.
CAMBODIA
Cambodia continues to rely heavily on foreign aid to help care for its people and stabilize the economy. Approximately 70% of the workforce is employed in farming, yet nearly half of Cambodia’s children continue to suffer from severe malnutrition. LHA, in Siem Reap, provides a home, education, healthcare, love and opportunity for orphans. LHA also runs other programs such as a sewing training center and learning and foreign language schools.
PERU
Comunidad Campesina de Huama & Chumpepokes
This Quechuan community based in the very remote, mountainous region of the Peruvian Andes is living in very harsh and challenging conditions. Unable to grow enough food for their children, the families survive by eating mostly potatoes. The only other nutritious food easily available locally is fruit. Meat, milk and other protein items are very hard to come by due to a lack of funds and the location. The school is organized and supported by the community because the government does not provided assistance. Currently they are lacking proper funding to feed these children a nutritional diet.
